Known as the “Birthplace of Minnesota,” Stillwater is rich in history, character, and breathtaking river views. Enjoy a 45-minute narrated trolley tour as you journey through the city’s past, from its days as a booming lumber town filled with grand Victorian mansions to its reputation today as “One of the Prettiest Little Towns in America.” Following the tour, we will walk across the street to The Freight House Restaurant for lunch. Originally built as a train depot, The Freight House became the first building in Stillwater to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, recognizing its important role in the city’s history. Your registration fee includes school bus transportation, lunch, and admission to the trolley tour. This 4-hour class meets the requirement for both the initial defensive driving course (the former 8-hour class is no longer required) and the refresher course. Whether you’re earning your defensive driving certificate for the first time or renewing it, completing this course will qualify you for three years of insurance discounts. The class is taught by professional, certified instructors from the Minnesota Safety Council. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate to submit to your insurance provider. Those over the age of 55 qualify to receive a 10 percent discount on their auto insurance after completing the Defensive Driving course. To maintain this discount, a 4-hour refresher course is required every three years. Register at least one week before the class date; no walk-ins. IMPORTANT UPDATE: Effective July 1, 2024, the 4-hour defensive driving program can be taken for the initial and the refresher courses. Safeway has chosen a secure Zoom platform to conduct the class. Students will be required to be in front of the camera and interactive for the full three hour class. Safeway will be emailing the classroom handouts and 2024 MN Driver’s Manual in pdf format for printing. If you do not have the ability to print your course materials, please contact tkohner@isd622.org at least one week prior to the start of your class to pick up a printed packet. Safeway Driving School provides a comprehensive driver education program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for safe and responsible driving. Drone Racing (Grades 3-9)STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)Students will learn how to fly like the pros in the Drone Racing League by training on a flight simulator. Once they learn the basics of flying, they’ll assemble their very own drone which they can optionally purchase during the camp. After learning drone safety and maintenance, students will take their drone to the skies and compete in numerous races and challenges. Led by experienced instructors, students will leave camp with the skills and knowledge to pilot their drones and keep them running.
